Chandrababu Naidu's desperation to win the elections is showing. Late last evening Chandrababu announced a cash transfer scheme? of sorts.
If Babu has his way the poorest of the poor families will get Rs. 2000 per month, while the middle and lower middle class families will get Rs. 1500 per month if the TDP comes to power. These monies will be transferred over and above the existing pensions that are already being disbursed. Chandrababu estimated that this scheme will cost the exchequer over Rs. 18,000 crores, Over and above this, the TDP chief has promised free electricity for a fan, two bulbs.
And for good measure he also promised a colour TV free for the poor. All these promises have been made without consulting the partners in the maha kutami. Jayaprakash Narayan of Loksatta has blasted Chandrababu Naidu for the open attempt to mislead voters with a free for all scheme. Democracy cannot flourish under these circumstances, he said.
