It is by now widely accepted that candidates contesting for Lok Sabha and Assembly seats will have to spend anywhere between Rs. 20 crores and Rs. 15 crores to stand any chance of winning in their respective constituencies. The Congress is acknowledged as the party that can really flex its financial muscle to a telling effect. The TDP runs a close second. While the TRS and left parties have to spread their resources very thin. The worst hit will in all probability be the PRP. Many contestants in this party were banking on liquidating their real estate assets to finance their elections. But the financial meltdown and the resultant realty crash have seen their property values drop appreciably. As things stand now, barring premier candidates, most of the newbie’s in the PRP are now harbouring second thoughts as to whether they should actually contest the elections or not.
