high tech paintResearchers at the University of Tokyo claim to have developed a special
paint to prevent wireless signals from being broadcast.The paint contains an aluminum-iron oxide which resonates at the same frequency as Wi-Fi or other radio waves.If you were to paint an entire room, the paint would prevent signals from coming in and going out from your wireless network.
Shin-ichi Ohkoshi, who is leading the project, said the technology is the first to absorb frequencies transmitting at 100GHz (gigahertz). Signals loaded with a larger amount of data - such as wireless Internet - travel at a higher frequency than FM radio, for example.
There are some skeptics. Security engineer at Cisco UK Mark Jackson told BBC News that, "The use of electromagnetic shielding techniques are nothing new. They have been utilised by highly sensitive environments for many years."
Jackson also states the importance of network security through other measures in addition to the use of the paint. "Paint that blocks RF based Wi-Fi transmissions does not in any way remove the need to ensure a robust security model is deployed."
